Common repairs on Merthyr roofs
Most houses in Merthyr Tydfil are terraced or semi-detached, many with slate roofs over a hundred years old. Wind and rain coming up the valley take their toll, and the same few problems come up again and again.
- Slipped or cracked slates, usually from nail fatigue: the nails rust through and the slate slides down
- Ridge tiles coming loose as the mortar under them cracks and washes out
- Lead or mortar flashing failing where the roof meets a chimney or a neighbour’s wall
- Valleys and gutters blocked with moss, so water backs up under the slates
- Leaks around skylights, vents and satellite dish fixings
What happens when the roofer visits
The roofer looks at the roof from the ground, from a ladder or, if it is safe, from the roof itself. A leak inside does not always sit under the damage outside, because water can run along timbers or felt first, so a good roofer checks the area around it too.
You should get a written quote that says what will be done, what materials will be used, whether scaffolding is needed and how long any guarantee lasts. If a roofer says the whole roof needs replacing, it is fair to ask why a repair will not do, and to get a second opinion.
Repair or replace?
A repair is usually right when the problem is in one place and the rest of the roof is sound. When slates are slipping all over, the felt underneath has perished, or you are paying for repairs every winter, a new roof can work out cheaper over ten years. Our guide on repairing or replacing a roof goes through the signs.

Roof repairs: questions people ask
Who is the best person to fix a leaking roof?
A roofer, not a general handyman. Finding where a leak starts takes experience, because water often travels along timbers or felt before it shows inside. Look for someone local with reviews you can check, a written quote and public liability insurance.
What happens if a roof leak is left untreated?
A small leak soaks the felt, battens and rafters, and the timber starts to rot. Inside, you get damp insulation, stained and sagging ceilings, mould and, if water reaches wiring, an electrical risk. A small repair left for a winter or two can turn into a much bigger job.
What happens in a roof inspection?
The roofer checks the roof from the ground, a ladder or the roof itself: slates or tiles, ridge, valleys, flashing, chimney, gutters and the roofline. Where they can, they look in the loft for daylight, damp and the state of the felt and timbers. You should then get a written note of what they found and what they recommend.
Can a roof be repaired in the rain?
A roofer can usually make a temporary repair, such as a tarp or a patch, in wet weather to stop water getting in. Permanent work like mortar, lead and felt needs a dry spell, so expect the full repair to follow when the weather allows.
How quickly will I hear back?
